I am excited to announce the release of Retro Males, which features classic gay sex and retro gay porn from renowned gay porn company Bijou Video. Bijou Video is the only gay porn company in the world with such a large vintage gay porn collection from this era and now you can watch gay porn produced in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s at Retro Males, where the videos have been transformed into high definition size digital video format. At Retro Males you can enjoy movies and photos from the creative era, when there was artistry and provocative stories accompanying each scene. There’s more to classic and vintage porn than just porn itself, many of these videos were filmed at a time when homosexuality was repressed, so many of the guys involved in these productions were creating history through sexual liberation, which has been documented in these videos, which you can continue enjoy watching today.

The owner and founder of Bijou Video is Steven Toushin and many of you may already know that he ran the Bijou Theater in Chicago for over twenty years, which unfortunately closed down towards the end of last year. The Bijou Theater showcased x-rated gay porn where Steven fought numerous legal battles against those who tried to shut him down because of obscenity laws. It was after closing the Bijou Theater that Steven realized he needed to focus on embracing the latest technology so he could introduce this impressive classic and vintage gay porn collection to others using the online video delivery platform.

It’s important to note that classic and vintage porn is not considered bareback porn, even though it involves men having anal sex with other men without the use of condoms. That’s because classic and vintage porn existed before the HIV epidemic and it wasn’t until after this that the term “bareback” was coined. Classic and vintage gay porn is all about the freedom of the guys engaging in sex with other men, which is how it was back then. This is what makes classic and vintage porn so special and with the introduction of these videos from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s being digitally remastered, we can once again enjoy watching the films that mean so much to many.

New videos are being added to Retro Males twice weekly to help build an impressive members area, plus members of Retro Male also enjoy bonus videos from other sites including Hot Desert Knights, San Diego Boy Productions, Daddy Raunch and Backroom Fuckers. For a limited time members will receive two months access to Retro Males for the price of one and there are other membership options available to help save you money in the long term including three months or twelve months.

I have included some photos below to help you appreciate what you can expect to see inside the Retro Males members area. This is a very exciting time for fans of classic and vintage gay porn, so make sure you experience Retro Males today so you can enjoy watching exciting gay porn from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

    Hello-

I’m dating myself but i remember seeing several of the classic films from the pre-condom era when they first opened in Manhattan’s numerous gay theaters. over the course of the classic pre-condom era approx. 16 gay theaters operated in Manhattan with 8 being the most open at any given point. the theaters that showed films 1st run often had the stars of the film due personal appearances the opening week.

it is with these personal appearances that I got to meet some of the most prominent stars of the period, whether meeting up with them during their personal appearances in Manhattan or when I traveled out to Calf. I had the pleasure of rawfucking and breeding many of the prominent stars of the period.

while I’ve never been to Chicago i knew of the Bijou Theater since they had ads for it on the company’s site. its too bad it closed. i wonder if the lease was up and they’re gentrifying the neighborhood. its interesting the Nob Hill Theater has been ***the gay theater*** in San Francisco for 42? years and I’m sure if the authorities tried to close it down they’ve have hell to pay. here’s the interesting thing- the Bijou Theater was in a more or less business district if I’m not mistaken whereas the Nob Hill Theater is in a decidedly nice neighborhood. in fact there’s a cable car stop on Powell and Bush St, a half a block away from the theater. so tourists can’t help but notice the theater’s rather large neon sign.

I recall some of the interesting conversations we have had regarding the gay theaters and many of the pre-condom classics and it really is an exciting time with the launch of Retro Males to invigorate these videos now that so many of the theaters have closed. The younger generation may not be aware of what many men have gone through to make the sexual freedoms we enjoy today possible. Many of the men in these videos and most certainly the legal struggles Steven Toushin endured has helped to create a sexual liberation at a time when it was challenging for gay men to have sex with each other. That’s one of the reasons why the videos at Retro Males are so important and the new site gives us a chance to enjoy the porn that was created during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

I think it’s amazing that you were able to meet some of the most prominent gay porn stars of the period and even have unprotected sex with them, this is very special indeed and you must have some fantastic memories from your experiences. I know you have had some wonderful experiences, which you kindly documented for me and I appreciate you sharing some of your encounters with me.

From what I understand, the Bijou Theater was closed because they lost their lease and apparently they couldn’t move to a new premises because their license was tied to that location, which is very sad. It sounds like it was a forced closure, but with many of the films being digitally remastered, many men will be able to enjoy these videos now that Steven has made the decision to embrace the online platform to showcase the many beautiful videos he has in his collection. I must visit the Nob Hill Theater sometime when I’m in San Francisco – this is a must for any gay man to experience at least once in his life.

    Hello Again-

as someone who saw many of the films from the classic pre-condom period when they originally released in theaters i knew you’d enjoy my comments. a few additional thoughts.

virtually all the films made during this period up to the mid-80s were shot on film and shown as such in theaters just like regular movies. plus the vast majority of films had a beginning, middle and end storyline just like regular films and weren’t just several sex scenes edited together to make a movie.

I had the idea the closure of the Bijou Theater had to do with them not getting a lease renewal and i was right. if i am not mistaken the Bijou was in a business/industrial area or as I call them in NYC a neither here nor there area. so the continued existence of San Francisco’s Nob Hill Theater in a decidedly nice neighborhood is an exception. the only thing i can think of other than if the authorities tried to close the Nob Hill they’ve have hell to pay is that the manager/owner of the theater owns the building and the land. this way they don’t have to worry about a rent increase or a lease renewal.

I appreciate you sharing your experiences and insight into classic pre-condom porn Joseph, because this is something that interests me, as this was a time when some fantastic gay porn was filmed and it’s great that the porn produced in this era is now being made available online so others can also enjoy watching it.

I have never been to an adult theater and I do feel as though I’m missing out, because it sounds like it’s quite an experience. When I visit San Francisco, I will definitely visit the Nob Hill Adult Theater.

It’s very unfortunate that the lease issue is what resulted in the demise of the Bijou Theater. It seems as though a lot of real estate is sold and then redeveloped and this sadly takes away the history that existed for many years with it. If the owner of the Nob Hill Theater in San Francisco owns the building, then this will definitely help avoid a situation like the Bijou Theater lease from causing the same problem.

    Hello-

its my pleasure to give you info about the classic pre-condom period and i just thought of something i know you will find interesting. as I have said during the classic pre-condom period there were over all 16? gay theaters around Manhattan with say 8 being the most open at any given point. most of the gay theaters that existed during this period were decent sized retail properties that were converted to show films. in this category would be the David Cinema, the Kings Cinema, the Ramrod, the Rendezvous, the Big Top and the Follies to name a few. on the other hand a number of prominent gay theaters of the period were built as theaters or the like. for instance the space i knew as the Gaiety opened as a dance hall prior to WW II. the Park Miller had opened as Henry’s Miller’s Theater in 1924 (Miller was a prominent producer of the period). the two leading gay theaters of the period were the 55th St. Playhouse and the Adonis. the 55th St, Playhouse opened in the early 30s showing foreign films.

the last few years showed low budget indie American films. it became a gay porn house Dec. of 1971 with the release of “Boys in the Sand”. the Adonis opened as the Tivoli in 1922. it was built to showcase vaudeville acts and films. under the original name is started showing what were known as exploitation or soft core porn films in the late 60s. it became a gay porn house the end of 1974. the Tivoli/Adonis was a rather ornate theater with a nice sized orchestra and a decent sized balcony. in fact when you entered the lobby to buy a ticket you could tell it was one of the many grand movie theaters built in Manhattan in the 1920s. at Christmas time they always had a large ornately decorated tree with wrapped presents underneath it in the corner opposite the box office. if not the whole country the Adonis and the Park-Miller were certainly the largest theaters to ever become gay porn houses in the NYC metropolitan area.

Hello Joseph, Thank you for sharing this really interesting information. I am surprised at how many gay theaters were operating simultaneously and it would have been amazing to personally experience visiting these theaters, so I am glad you had an opportunity to experience them yourself. I want to thank you for sharing this information here, because I am finding it informative and it’s something I have never experienced and unfortunately many gay theaters have either closed down or are struggling. I am sure others will also be interested in this information, so thanks for sharing it Joseph. 🙂

    Hello Again-

i am glad you found the info fascinating. some additional info.

two theaters i forgot about that were prominent in their day were the Eros which was on 8th Ave. and 45 St. and the Showpalace on 8th Ave. and 43 St. like many theaters i listed in my first comment these two theaters were decent sized retail spaces that were converted to show films and have a stage for live shows. at the Showpalace i met Brian Estevez who made a number of films in the late 80s. at the Eros i met Kip Knoll, Lee Marlin and Nick Rogers who appeared the opening week of one of the all time great films of the period Grease Monkeys.

also in the late 70s the Adonis hosted the debut of a gay porn film starring Jack Wrangler and the Christy Twins that was in 3-D. it was an interesting experience.

the Adonis operated till the Fall of 1990 i believe. a new combination business center and condo complex known as World Wide Plaza had opened across the street and the developer was aghast that it was across from a gay porn theater so he bought the Adonis torn it down and put up another condo tower.

Thank you for the additional information Joseph. It’s great to learn more about the theaters and it would be amazing if many of them still existed today. Even though I have not been able to visit any of the theaters you have mentioned, I almost feel as if I am familiar with them just from reading what you’ve written, so thank you again for sharing these details here Joseph. 🙂
