Some Insight Into the Helix Studios Bareback Production Slowdown

Porn

If you have been wondering about the absence of recent bareback videos at Helix Studios produced by the studio itself, I can provide you with some insight courtesy of Keith Miller, the owner of the studio. You can still find regular bareback porn releases featured at Helix Studios from third-party studios, but since January 9, 2015 each of the bareback scenes involve content produced by Boy Crush (Bare Twinks) and Staxus, with no Helix Studio produced scenes after this date. The most recent bareback video produced by Helix Studios was released on January 8, 2015. I have received a number of messages asking about what is happening to the bareback scenes at Helix Studios, so I decided the best way to find out is to contact Keith Miller himself to see what is happening.

Keith responded by saying that the studio has never focused on producing bareback porn and he confirmed that some of their condom releases have been the most popular videos at the site. I got the impression from Keith that he didn’t want Helix Studios to be known specifically as a bareback studio, rather preferring to focus on the models, whether they’re using condoms or not. If you look at the number of videos at the Helix Studios, they have definitely produced more condom scenes than bareback scenes, but there has pretty much been a constant presence of bareback scene releases over the years, with Sean Storm’s video Storm Drain being the first bareback video ever released by Helix Studios.

Helix has not stopped producing videos since 2004. Some of our videos are non condom, others are not. We have never focused on our “bareback” videos but rather on high quality productions using the sexiest 18-25 year olds we can find. Some of our biggest stars have never been in a non condom video and specifically filming “bareback” is not our goal. Our models are the stars of our cameras not whether they do bb or not. We will continue to film the highest quality performers we can find and when the performers desire to film bb we will do so.

Our Helix Academy series is all condom and outsells anything we have ever done in bareback. It is sad when studios believe that filming bareback makes up for their total lack of originality and quality. There will be additional non condom scenes produced by Helix, but we will not lose focus on the models. Thank you for your question. – Keith Miller, Helix Studios.

If you look back at the history of Helix Studios, there have been quite a few changes over the years. The studio was originally based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but later moved to San Diego, California, where they are still based today. The studio has also experimented with its branding, creating several brands including 8Teen Boy featuring their condom scenes, Hot Studs featuring their bareback scenes, Spank This featuring their spanking scenes, Raw Lads featuring their British bareback scenes and Latin Studs showcasing their Latino scenes. Helix Studios later brought each of these individual brands under the Helix Studios umbrella and now there are only Helix Studios and Spank This brands remaining.

While Keith Miller has said that producing bareback porn is not a priority for the studio, he did say that the studio will continue producing bareback porn in the future. Based on this comment it sounds like new bareback scenes from the studio will continue to be produced sporadically, but the consistency we once enjoyed doesn’t sound likely to happen in the future based on Keith Miller’s current statement.

Fans of bareback porn can still enjoy watching lots of hot bareback videos at Helix Studios, with an impressive lineup of bareback videos waiting for you to enjoy inside the members area, plus you can also enjoy watching bareback videos from Boy Crush and Staxus. Although the most recent Helix Studios bareback produced video was released on January 8, 2015, there have already been 43 bareback videos released since then from Boy Crush and Staxus, which is still an impressive bareback release schedule for Helix Studios, even if these releases have not been produced by their own production team.

While you might be disappointed to hear that there will no longer be a reliable bareback release schedule featuring porn produced by Helix Studios, you can certainly still find yourself immersed in bareback porn offerings at the site, which you can enjoy with a very affordable membership. For only $9.95 a month, you can stream the videos at Helix Studios, including the impressive collection of bareback videos, plus you can also enjoy the new bareback scenes added from Boy Crush and Staxus (giving you access to content from three studios for one low price membership). You can also choose a membership that offers both streaming and downloads, which is still reasonably priced at $24.95 a month.

    Hello-

I’ve read your detailed write up on the bareback situation at Helix. a few thoughts are below.

1.Miller seems to be on the defensive side in the tone of his reply to your inquiry. there has to be a reason why they have for all intents and purpose stopped producing their own bareback videos. said defensive tone seems almost anti-bareback. also a comment on the line about they will continue to produce bareback videos if the models desire to. as stated above they have effectively stopped producing their own bareback videos for a reason or reasons I’m sure Miller would not divulge so that line is a crock of you know what.

2,also to placate the members who they know joined the site specifically for their bareback videos they have been posting the last three months bareback videos from BoyCrush and Staxus. a bad idea. they are inferior both in terms of the physical beauty of the models to the production values. its kind of like Bel Ami in order to up the amount of bareback videos on their site starting to post bareback videos from some crappy Eastern European studio.

3.again Miller’s reply seems almost anti-bareback which is bizarre since they have produced some of the finest let me rephrase that *SOME OF THE FINEST* twink bareback/breeding videos ever produced in this country topping even Cobra video. how can a studio which took the time and effort to craft such stellar videos as “One Last Time”, “Executive Order” and “Helping Hands” say it was never their intent to be known for their bareback videos.

Hey Joseph, The reply I received from Keith Miller is interesting and I decided to include his full response in my article to keep everything in proper context. Sometimes blogs or media outlets will try to twist what is being said and I didn’t want to do that, so I included Keith’s full response to me so everyone can read exactly what was said. I am happy to respond to some of your points below.

      1. I have been curious as to why there hasn’t been any bareback releases at Helix Studio over the past few months that have been produced by the studio themselves. In my mind I was wondering whether it had something to do with the Cal/OSHA laws that exist in the state where Helix Studios is based. This is why I initially thought the studio might be importing bareback scenes from Arizona and Europe. It could also be to do with Keith not wanting Helix Studios to have a barebacking reputation. If you Google “helix studios florida”, you will see this article from five years ago: “Barebacking porn death: Myrtle Beach writer speaks” (http://goqnotes.com/6272/barebacking-porn-death-myrtle-beach-writer-speaks/) where the article closely associates Helix Studios with models becoming infected with HIV after working for the studio. It’s important to point out that none of this has been proven, which the article itself states, but you could see why the studio might want to distance itself from such a thing. The main model referred to in this article who died initially worked for Cobra Video and later worked for Helix Studios. What I would like to add here, is that studios can thoroughly test their models for Sexually Transmitted Infections, but what they cannot do is control what models do in their personal lives after they have worked for a studio.

      2. It does seem that even though Helix Studios may have slowed down their bareback porn production, they are still aware of the importance of bareback porn at their site, because they continue to provide bareback porn to their members through the Boy Crush (Bare Twinks) and Staxus bareback scenes. You are right in saying that the bareback porn produced by Helix Studios is some of the finest twink bareback porn around and this is why importing porn from other studios cannot match the excellent production values Helix Studios is renowned for.

      3. I think this point comes back to Helix Studios not wanting to be known as a barebacking studio based on some of the articles that have been published. I would like to reiterate that there has been no proven evidence that models who may have filmed bareback scenes with the studio became infected on set and if any became infected later in their life, it’s most likely that they would have contracted the virus outside the studio environment, which is something that cannot be controlled by the studio itself. Unfortunately this stigma can become attached to studios and I’m thinking that this could be a valid concern for Helix Studios. I can only base my responses on information received from Keith Miller and that’s why I need to maintain a neutral position based on his response.

    Hello Again-

as always thanks for your detailed reply. if i might mention another thought or two on the subject.

1.if the studio (in other words Keith Miller) got wary about shooting bareback porn after the Florida article then why at the end of 2012 did they start producing twink bareback porn that technically and artistically superior to anything they had released before. as i said in my first comment i don’t see how a studio that goes out of their way to make *THE BEST* twink bareback porn since the demise of Cobra Video can also say that they don’t want to be known primarily for their bareback porn, that sounds somewhat bi-polar to me. so Miller’s comments about bareback porn are quite contradictory considering all the time, effort and money he put into them.

2.as you know i look at the Helix site every often to see what’s what. well guess what? Lucas Knight from Lucas Ent. who shot a handful of bareback videos for them late last year is now shooting videos for them.

3.in the note Miller says they will continue to produce bareback porn if the models wish to do so. but the last video posted was “Spank Bank” on Jan. 8th. which means it was shot late last year. so since late last year all the models who were well liked and regarded in the industry for their Helix bareback videos suddenly gave up on bareback? yea right. i wish i was a fly on the wall to see exactly what’s going on at Helix.

Hey Joseph, This issue does make you wonder about what’s going on at Helix Studios when it comes to them producing bareback porn at the moment. These are my responses to your further points.

      1. The Florida article I mentioned was just an example of what’s out there and why the studio might want to distance itself from being referred to as a bareback studio. There very well may be something else going on. My initial thoughts had more to do with Cal/OSHA than anything else, since they have been cracking down recently on studios producing bareback porn in the state of California, even fining some studios for breaches, such as not protecting their models from bodily fluids. What supported my thoughts even more is the fact that Helix Studios had been pairing up real-life partners or those who had been in relationships in some of their later bareback releases. They also filmed at least one of their bareback scenes in Las Vegas, which was something else that added weight to my thinking. If I had to make a guess about what is really going on, it would be something to do with Cal/OSHA, where the studio is worried about being fined or having their business put under the microscope and using condoms helps the studio avoid many of the safety issues with Cal/OSHA.

      2. I have noticed Lucas Knight working for Helix Studios after having worked with Lucas Entertainment in bareback scenes.

      3. This is a very interesting point, because you are right in saying that a number of the models who have previously appeared in bareback videos with the studio are now using condoms. This is what brings me back to my Cal/OSHA thoughts, but this is just me exploring thoughts and not actually making any specific statements regarding this.

If I wanted to see Staxus videos, I would go to their site. The staxus models are identified as much at Helix and they don’t clarify their orientation. European models tend to be more gay4pay, which to me is fake. I want performers are having sex not “acting”. I subscribed to their site once, but there wasn’t enough bb for me, so I stopped. I think something else is going on. I cannot believe that if they did more bb, their subscribers would increase.

Hey bigrawtop, You are right, if you want to watch Staxus videos, then you would visit Staxus and the same with the Bare Twinks videos. People come to Helix Studios because they want to watch videos produced by Helix Studios and not some other studio. It’s also a good point about the European models being more gay4pay and in addition to Californian based Helix Studios importing European bareback porn videos, CockSure Men, another Californian based studio is doing the same thing. When it comes to American bareback porn, Helix Studios is featuring bareback content that has been filmed in Arizona, while CockSure Men is featuring bareback content that has been filmed in Florida. This is why I am thinking that the Cal/OSHA issue is more about what might be going on rather than the quality of the models, but then again, I’m not directly involved with the studio, so I am only exploring possibilities for discussion. The studio must be aware of the importance of bareback porn, because of the bareback scenes being imported from two different providers they are featuring at their site. If Cal/OSHA is also part of the issue, then perhaps Helix Studios will relocate and return to producing bareback porn if this is one of the reasons explaining their current slowdown.

Whatever happend – we all don’t know

But Staxus or Boycrush movies don’t have the special Helix Quality.
Helix made good quality bareback porn. Look at the BC videos – they did not shoot outdoor – no Story etc
Staxus – no thx – gay for pay mixed East models with some UK models – there is totally no chemistry.
I have cancelled already my Helix membership – btw..

Hey Mark, It would be great to know for sure what is going on. I have tried to find out by asking the studio owner himself and I have presented his response here in full, but his response does leave you feeling like there’s more to the story.

I agree that the Boy Crush and Staxus videos feel different and they cannot match or surpass the quality of the Helix Studios bareback videos and this is what Helix Studios needs to understand from a members perspective. They are trying to fill their members area with bareback content from third-party studios that cannot match the consistency and high expectations that have been set by Helix Studios.

I know of several people who have cancelled their Helix Studios membership due to the ongoing delay with the studio featuring their-own new bareback scenes. If this trend continues, then the studio will surely need to revisit their current decision, unless they have lots of members who enjoy watching latex-wrapped cocks sliding inside and out of smooth holes.

    Hello Again-

i don’t work in the mail order room at Helix nor do I work in the customer support office which brings me to my point- i don’t have any personal knowledge of which of their dvds sells best or how many members write to say they joined specifically for the condomed videos. but i am quite wary of Miller’s claim that the condomed dvds sell better and that the condomed videos online are more popular.

Hey Joseph, I don’t have access to the Helix Studios stats myself, so I’m not privy to the information about whether their condom DVD’s and memberships sell better than bareback, but I would have also thought that bareback would be more popular than condoms. The good news is that a Helix produced bareback scene has just been released at the site today, after a three month bareback drought at the site. Yay!

Hey Mark, You’re welcome for the reply and I’m pleased to hear that you’re enjoying the blog. That is fantastic news about a brand new Helix produced bareback scene being released today and it looks like a hot one featuring Andy Taylor and Kody Knight barebacking at the beach, in what appears to be a personal video these boyfriends filmed themselves. After a three month absence, it’s great to see another bareback scene produced by Helix Studios featured at the site and I hope we will see even more to come. I appreciate this news and I’ll get this scene featured at my blog as soon as possible.

    Hello-

as always thanks for your reply. as you state a new actual Helix video was posted on the bareback page today. its been three months nineteen days since the last actual Helix Video was posted on the bareback page so as you say its something to celebrate. its makes the three month nineteen day drought even more fascinating. two additional thoughts.

in my last comment i said Lucas Knight who has shot bareback for Lucas Ent. was shooting videos for Helix. what i forgot to say is that he is also shooting condomed videos for them which seems like a waste of talent.

also i wonder if the newly posted video is a newly shot one or if it was in a group of bareback videos that was done in their last bareback shooting period but just being posted now.

Hey Joseph, You’re very welcome for my replies. It has been an extremely long time between Helix produced bareback scene postings and a refreshing surprise as well. I’m hoping we will see a return to regular Helix produced bareback videos at the site, but I guess time will tell.

Lucas Knight did film bareback with Helix Studios initially, but is now filming condom scenes for them. There are other performers at the site who have also filmed bareback for the studio itself and other studios, but they are filming condom for the studio at the moment as well.

I have a few thoughts about the latest bareback scene at Helix Studios, as do you. I would also like to know whether this latest bareback scene is a recently filmed video and coming back to my thoughts about Cal/OSHA possibly being involved, this scene does not appear to have been filmed by Helix Studios themselves. It appears to have been filmed by two boyfriends who set up their own cameras and the scene was then “acquired” by Helix Studios. If there is an issue with Cal/OSHA, then perhaps this style of filming might get around the issue, because the boyfriends could have quite possibly filmed the video of their own accord and may not have technically been employees of the studio for the purposes of filming this scene. If this is the case, then this could very well be smart thinking by the studio to get around the Cal/OSHA issues. I’m not even sure that Cal/OSHA is an issue for the studio, but I keep coming back to this based on other bareback studios based in California experiencing problems with Cal/OSHA requirements.

    Hello Again-

    a few additional thoughts-

1.as you say the models shooting the video maybe a way of Helix getting around the OSHA mandate so we might see more such videos at the site, unfortunately the previous RC and POV videos were never favorites of mine.

2.another thought on Miller’s e-mail to you. i am sure nothing happens at Helix without Miller’s okay or input. now the bareback videos I downloaded the last time i was a member for instance- Executive Order, Helping Hands and One Last Time are the most perfectly crafted beautifully erotic twink bareback videos I have ever seen. so obviously they weren’t thought up, filmed and edited on someone’s lunch break. so doesn’t the decidedly anti-bareback tone of Miller’s e-mail to you totally contradict the loving care Helix put into every aspect of the videos mentioned?

    • Brad Berrigan
      April 29, 2015 at 3:25 pm

Hey Joseph, I am enjoying this discussion, because it’s an important one and exploring the possibilities is very interesting.

      1. I’m not exactly sure when this video was shot, but it was filmed in a secluded location at Black’s Beach in San Diego, California. It looks like the guys entered a part of the area where the sign said no entry, perhaps to increase their level of privacy and to avoid being interrupted during the filming of this scene. I will be featuring this update here shortly, which is hot and it’s nice to see a bareback video filmed in the outdoors embracing the natural light.

      2. Something else I have been thinking about. Perhaps the tone of Keith Miller’s email isn’t really about being anti-bareback, but is more about his disappointment about not being able to film bareback scenes, possibly due to Cal/OSHA regulations. Maybe he isn’t permitted to discuss Cal/OSHA for some reason and this could be why he is using the quality models angle (which may in fact be a valid reason). I also find it difficult to see how the creator of the site could go from consistently producing top quality bareback videos over many years to suddenly move in a condom-centric direction. While Keith’s email does have tones of anti-bareback, perhaps he is simply reframing his thinking about bareback porn, but hopefully we will continue to see upcoming bareback videos at Helix Studios that have been filmed by the studio themselves, because they are extremely beautiful bareback twink masterpieces.

    Hello Again-

one question about this quite fascinating subject i have had is simple- the site started posting the BoyCrush and Staxus bareback videos when they temporarily ceased production on their own such videos. but how in God’s name did Miller think the members who grew accustomed to Helix’s own lovingly crafted high quality erotically beautiful twink bareback videos would ever be satisfied with the inferior BoyCrush and Staxus videos.

    • Brad Berrigan

Hey Joseph, This is a fascinating subject and thank you for showing an interest in it. Initially Helix Studios referred to the Boy Crush and Staxus videos as bonus content. I guess if you watch their condom scenes, then it would be bonus content, but the bareback porn from these two studios does appear to have replaced the Helix Studios produced bareback scenes. I’m sure that Keith Miller understands that the bareback scenes produced by Helix cannot be rivalled by other studios and perhaps he was thinking that members would be satisfied by the imported bareback scenes. The issue is that Helix members are accustomed to enjoying the high quality bareback videos the studio creates with gorgeous models and this is where the issue is. Perhaps now that the studio is aware that members are missing the Helix produced bareback videos, we might start seeing more bareback scenes released, even if they aren’t released as consistently as they once were. It does appear apparent that the Helix is aware of the need to make bareback porn available to members, which is why we are seeing the Boy Crush and Staxus videos to help fill the gap where the new Helix bareback videos once appeared on a regular basis.

    Hello-

i apologize for bringing this up again. i realize Miller started posting the BoyCrush and Staxus bareback videos because Helix had stopped producing their own such videos and figured members would be satisfied with bareback videos from those two sites. but the videos from those two sites are inferior both technically and artistically to Helix’s own such videos, as you say he started posting them as bonus videos but why did he think fans of Helix’s own such videos would ever be satisfied with the BoyCrush and Staxus videos. that Miller thought members would actually be satisfied with those two site’s videos totally perplexes me.

    • Brad Berrigan

Hey Joseph, There’s no need to apologize, because I’m enjoying this discussion. I agree that Keith Miller probably introduced the bareback videos from Boy Crush and Staxus because he knew that his own bareback video production was going to slow down and thought that this might be a good solution. While the videos from the other studios are still great bareback videos, those studios feature different models, set designs and themes that produce a different vibe and to replicate the same standard of videos that Helix Studios is known to produce would be quite challenging for them. I’m sure Keith tried making the best decision possible when he chose to import bareback scenes from Boy Crush and Staxus, but as we’re seeing, there is a noticeable difference between the videos that indicates Helix Studios might need to relook at this decision. It would be interesting to see whether others feel the same way about this issue or whether they are happy with the current arrangement.

    Hello Again-

as i have mentioned to you a few times at the beginning of the year i e-mailed Helix say three times about the situation. the support office person who replied said basically the same thing Miller did about focusing on quality models and video production rather than on bareback. i wish i was still a member in which case i would say i was not renewing because i joined for Helix’s own such video not the inferior ones from BoyCrush and Staxus. not to stress the point but i don’t see anyone who fell in love with Helix’s own bareback videos possibly being satisfied with the videos from the other two sites.

      May 2, 2015 at 12:28 am

Hey Joseph, It does seem like the quality of the models is the consistent response from Helix Studios and that very well may have everything to do with the reason, but I also suspect that there may be some other reasons behind the decision as well, which I have discussed previously. I do wonder whether Helix Studios is receiving feedback from anyone else regarding the slowdown with the Helix produced bareback videos. Perhaps they are, which is why you have received the same response as I did when we asked about their bareback scenes. Helix Studios does have many beautiful guys in their portfolio of models and their production values are very high, which is why I feel their recent slowdown in bareback production is so noticeable, because other studios producing bareback twink videos don’t have the same ingredients with their video productions. It will be interesting to follow what happens and whether we start seeing an increase in the number of bareback videos produced by Helix Studios in the future. I am totally fine with them filming and releasing condom videos, but it would also be great if they would produce some bareback videos as well, even if the bareback video output is a smaller ratio so fans of the bareback Helix videos will still get to enjoy fresh bareback scenes from the studio.
