I have just read an interesting article stating that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering approving the first over-the-counter HIV test that would allow people to test themselves for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at home, quickly and easily without requiring any medical supervision. It has been possible for Americans to purchase home HIV test kits through mail order for a number of years, but these kits have not received FDA approval, although it looks like this might be about to change.
If you’ve ever asked someone what they think about the people who produce bareback porn, often the word irresponsible will come up. This is because many people consider bareback porn producers to be reckless and selfish, where the health of those involved is not taken into consideration. I have operated bareback blogs since 2008 and a bareback sex resource since 2004, so I have personally experienced the reactions that some people have about bareback sex and bareback porn.

Most barebackers try to be as honest as possible when it comes to disclosing their HIV status, but this is not always the case. Some men may not know that they are HIV positive and some who do might not openly disclose their HIV positive status. Others may not admit their HIV status if they fear it might reduce the likelihood of them having bareback sex or they may be uncomfortable raising the subject. There are some HIV positive men who are considered gift givers who enjoy the thrill of barebacking with HIV negative men who are unaware of their HIV positive status. This article is not about bug chasing or gift giving, it’s about men who are trying to be as honest as possible about disclosing their HIV status.
The issue of barebacking, whether it be bareback sex or bareback porn can be controversial because of the health implications which can be associated with unprotected anal sex. Before the term “bareback” was coined, unprotected sex was simply sex and the use of condoms before the AIDS era was believed to be limited among homosexual men, because condoms were mainly used by heterosexuals for birth control purposes. Condoms were previously used and are still promoted today for use as a birth control device and to assist with reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Because men engaging in anal sex do not need to worry about the possibility of pregnancy, the main reason men having anal sex would consider using condoms would be to help reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
The idea behind this article is to inspire thinking by considering ways to help make bareback sex a somewhat safer experience for men who have chosen to have bareback sex with other men. This article has been created for the purpose of exploring techniques that might help reduce the health risks for men who have already made the decision to incorporate bareback sex into their personal lives. Please understand that this article should not be used as a set of HIV prevention guidelines and professional advice needs to be sought prior to acting on anything discussed here. There is no guarantee that by following these precautions you will avoid HIV transmission, because even when you take extreme care, the possibility of seroconversion still exists.
The discussion of HIV status has always been an important part of the barebacking process to help reduce the spread of HIV. Some barebackers prefer to avoid the discussion of HIV status and actually experience sexual intercourse rather than talking about it. There can sometimes be an association where discussing HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections removes the eroticism from bareback sex and replaces the experience with a medical element. The discussion does not need to be clinical, but it should take place prior to engaging in unprotected sex to protect those involved from both a health perspective and a legal perspective.
Not all barebackers are HIV-positive. Men who have bareback sex can be HIV-negative, HIV-positive or even unaware of their current HIV status. Some men who are HIV-negative and want to remain so may seek out bareback sex partners who believe they are HIV-negative also. Men who choose to have unprotected sex with other men who have the same HIV status as themselves are undertaking a process called serosorting. It’s important to understand that whilst taking care when serosorting, there’s no guarantee about its effectiveness and seroconversion can still occur.
Some HIV-negative men who have made the decision to get the “bug” or the “gift” are so sure that they want to “convert” and become HIV-positive that they aim to have unprotected sex with as many HIV-positive men as possible to achieve their goal. To help make this possible, bug chasers may choose to attend parties along with gift givers to help them sero-convert. These parties are referred to as “conversion parties” or “bug parties”, because the party participants attend with the intention of sero-converting men from having an HIV-negative status to an HIV-positive status.
The words “bug chaser” and “gift giver” might appear to innocently describe pursuing insects or offering presents, but they actually have a more serious meaning when associated with sex. Bug chasing and gift giving are the words used to describe the sexual behaviors of some barebackers, but it’s important to highlight that not all barebackers are bug chasers or gift givers. Another important consideration is that bug chasing and gift giving can be both fantasy or reality based, meaning that the actual number of participants may be less than what is perceived.
